Lagos and its history
Situated in the extreme southwest of the European continent, this city was profoundly influenced by its contact with the Mediterranean and later with Africa and America. The first Mediterranean people to settle here were the Phoeniciaus, the Greeks and the Carthaginians.
When the Romans colonised the area they called the city Lacobriga that is the origin of the name of Lagos. After Romans, Islamic people conquered the region in VIII century and reinforced the town with new walls. Shortly afterwards Lagos increased its importance: is know its contributions in Portuguese discoveris. Infact many seamen, mainly from Lagos, took part in discoveries during the XV century and from here the caravels left to discover new worlds (Africa and America).
The streets and monuments of Lagos present the name of several navigators like Gil Eanes, Alvaro Esteves and Lançerote de Frentas. During the XVI and XVII century the maritime traffic was very intense. Lagos was the capital of Algarve from 1576 to 1756. Today, Lagos lives from it’s nice weather and wonderful beaches.
